Learning Icelandic

Learning Icelandic fall 2020 in the Capital area.

A new procedure regarding Icelandic courses is being developed.

In the meantime, the Directorate of Labour will refund in full (100%) one Icelandic course for each jobseeker this fall semester.

You can choose which language school you want to attend and register directly with them. (See a list of language schools in the Capital area below).

If you have already signed up and payed for a course please send a copy of the invoice to international@vmst.is for a refund.
Please note that you need to have a confirmed application for unemployment benefits to have a right to a refund/grant.

Job related courses

Vinnumálastofnun offers grants (námsstyrkur) which can be used for courses to develop skills which could increase your chances in the job market. This grant is 70.000 kr. per year, but never more than 50% of the total cost of the course. 

To apply please send email to international@vmst.is.

To be able to apply for this grant you need to have a confirmed application for unemployment benefits. 

This grant can be used for driving license C, D, CE, but not for category B

Studies on high-school and university level

You can study and maintain your full unemployment allowances under the following conditions:

  • If you want to study on a University level you can take up to 12 ECTS units per semester. You have to inform a counsellor by sending a confirmation from the school via email to international@vmst.is 
  • If you want to study on a high-school level, you can only take 1/3 of units scheduled in your school per semester at night school or distance learning and you must sign a study contract. To do that please contact a counselor by sending email to international@vmst.is.


Under special circumstances it is possible to take more units than described above. In those situations, unemployment benefits are reduced according to the units of the courses. In the link below you can receive more information about it:
