When should you apply for unemployment benefit?
To apply for unemployment benefit, you should register on the first day that you are without a job (full employment or part-time) and you are starting to look for new work. You will then be paid unemployment benefit from the date when you first register.
Where should you apply for unemployment benefit?
You apply for unemployment benefit on the internet, on the website of the Directorate of Labour (Vinnumálastofnun; VMS).
Click Apply on the website and register yourself as a user. When your registration is received, you will receive a confirmation sent to the e-mail address you have registered. Then, to make your application, click the link sent to you in the e-mail. Then follow the registration instructions.
Confirming your application
If you do not confirm your application within 2 weeks, it will become invalid and be deleted.
Documents to be submitted
