Using the period of service in an EEA-state to earn entitlement to unemployment benefits in Iceland – U1

If you intend to be job-seeking in Iceland you will then be able to obtain certification that you have had unemployment insurance in another EEA-state through a U1 certificate and that way you have increased your entitlement to receive unemployment benefits in Iceland. The requirement is that you have been a wage earner and that payroll taxes have been paid on your wages.
The condition for the Directorate of Labour to be able to include insurance periods and periods of service in another EEA-state is that you have worked in Iceland after you arrived in the country and before you apply for unemployment benefits, and that the periods are confirmed by a U1 certificate from the relevant EEA-state. If you have not worked in Iceland after you arrived in Iceland and before you apply for unemployment benefits the Directorate of Labour can not consider the period according to the U1 certificate with regard to increasing your entitlement to unemployment benefits in Iceland.
The Directorate of Labour draws your attention to the fact that you do not need to apply for a U1 certificate unless you have become unemployed and you intend to continue to stay in Iceland and receive unemployment benefits.
