New electronic application for maternity/paternity leave
Expectant parents who are in the labour market, can now apply for maternity/paternity leave in a simple and user-friendly way.
We have been working on a new electronic application for maternity/paternity leave in collaboration with island.is
The process obtains necessary documents to be submitted with the application automatically, and they are sent automatically to the spouse and the employer for approval.
Who can apply electronically?
- People in the labour market
- Self-employed
- An application for other groups is being developed (for example individuals are completing a maternity/paternity leave period, or those who have been receiving unemployment benefits), while it is still being developed older applications apply which you can find here
- Please note that the pregnant parent must complete the digital application before their spouse.
Right to maternity/paternity leave
If you are a parent in more than 25% employment ratio, you are entitled to a paid maternity/paternity leave for 6 months. Payments are income-related, and 80% of the average gross wages, up to a maximum payment of 600.000 kr. per month.
You can commence maternity/paternity leave up to one month before the expected date of birth.
An application must be submitted 6 weeks prior to the expected date of birth, or, if the child is already born, 6 weeks before the start date of the maternity/paternity leave.
