For who is a maternity / paternity grant?
A birth grant is on the one hand for parents studying full-time and on the other for parents not participating in the labour market or in a part-time employment below 25%.

Birth, primary adoption or permanent foster care
Each parent is entitled to 6 months and it is permitted to transfer up to 6 weeks to the other parent. The entire entitlement in total is therefore 12 months.
Not participating in the labour market or working in a 25% employment ratio
A maternitiy / paternity grant is divided into a grant for parents studying full-time and a grant for parents not participating in the labour market or in a part-time employment ratio below 25%, according to legislation on maternity/paternity leave and parental leave.
“A parent residing in Iceland who is not participating in the labour market or in a part-time employment below 25% is entitled to a maternity / paternity grant”.

Student
A maternity / paternity grant is divided into a grant for parents studying full-time and a grant for parents not participating in the labour market or in a part-time employment ratio below 25%, according to legislation on maternity/paternity leave and parental leave.
“A parent who fulfills the requirements of a full-time study is entitled to a birth grant. If a parent has worked in paid employment in at least a 25% employment ratio each month alongside studying the last 6 months prior to the birth of a child, primary adoption or permanent foster care, the parent is encouraged to inquire with the the staff of The Maternity/Paternity Leave Fund whether it is better to apply for payments as a parent in the labour market”.

- 83.233 kr. (for children 1. January - 31. December 2021)
- 87.062 kr. (for children 1. January - 31. December 2022)
- 91.937 kr. (for children who are born, adopted or in permanent foster care on 1. January-31.December 2023).
A monthly birth grant for a parent
studying full time (75 - 100%):
- 190.747 kr. (for children 1. January - 31. December 2021)
- 199.522 kr. (for children 1. January - 31. December 2022).
- 210.695 kr. (for children who are born, adopted or in permanent foster care on 1. January 2023).
