Entitlement to an adoption grant.
An adoption grant is a financial grant from the treasury to adoptive parents who have adopted a foreign child in accordance with the legislation on adoption.
The requirements of an adoption grant
- Primary adoption of foreign children is the requirement for the right to an adoption grant. Primary adoption means an adoption of a child that is not the child or adopted child of the applicant, cohabitation spouse or a spouse in a confirmed cohabitation.
- Only those who are domiciled in Iceland according to Registers Iceland have the right to the payment of an adoption grant.
- Only adoptive parents who have been issued with a pre-approval in accordance with legislation on adoption, are entitled to an adoption grant. This right is not transferable.
- An adoption grant is a one-off payment which is paid according to the adoptive parents’ application when the adoption of a foreign child has been confirmed in Iceland or an adoption permit has been issued in accordance with legislation on adoption.
