Right to parental leave
Parental leave is a leave of absence from paid employment acquired at the birth of a child, primary adoption of a child under eight years of age or the permanent foster care of a child under eight years of age. Parents are not entitled to payments from the Maternity/Paternity Leave Fund when they are on parental leave.

- Parents in the domestic labour market are entitled to 4 months for taking care of their child.
- Entitlement to a parental leave is acquired at the birth of a child.
- Adoption or a permanent foster care of a child starts when the child enters the home, providing that this is confirmed by the Child Welfare Committee or other relevant parties. If parents adopts a child from abroad, parental leave will start at the beginning of the trip, providing that the relevant authorities or institute have confirmed the adoption.
- An entitlement to a parental leave expires when the child reaches eight years of age. If an entitlement expires without having been used in full or in part by the time the child has reached eight years of age, this right can be reactivated if the child is later on diagnosed with a serious and chronic disease, or severe disability before reaching eighteen years of age.
Protection of accumulated entitlement
The accumulated entitlement which an employee has already earned when parental leave starts shall remain the same until the end of the leave. These rights shall be valid at the end of the leave, as well as changes that may have been made according to laws or collective agreements.
