The labour market in April 2020
Summary
The unemployment rate increased considerably in April because of the Covid-19 virus. The total unemployment was 17,8%, i.e. 7,5% general unemployment and 10,3% unemployment due to a labour market measure with public compensation for part-time employment. This measure is meant to try to keep the job contact between the employer and the employee while the economic crisis is ongoing. The employer pays 25% salary while the Unemployment Fund pays the rest. This labour market measure is temporary until the end of August. The employers´ amount of salary will be increased to 50% of the wages during the summer until the end of this labour market measure.
There were in average 14.520 unemployed, (7,5% general unemployment) and in addition 19.950 part-time unemployed (10,3% part-time unemployment) in April 2020.
Unemployment by gender:
The total unemployment by men in April was 18,0% and 17,6% for women, or up from 9,1% for men in March and up from 9,4% for women in March 2020.
The unemployment by young people:
There were 2.256 young, aged 18-24 years unemployed in April 2020, i.e. general unemployment (excluding part-time employment) or up from 1.837 in March 2020.
The long term unemployed:
There were 2.393 long term unemployed (over 1 year) in April 2020 (excluding part-time employment) or up from 2.206 in March 2020.
Open vacancies:
There were 145 new incoming open vacancies in April 2020 or up from 131 new incoming open vacancies in March 2020
Foreign workers:
There were in total 149 work permits (all types of work permit) issued in April 2020 or down from 200 in March 2020. There were 21 foreign service companies registered to Directorate of Labour in April 2020. These foreign service companies employed 127 workers in April 2020.
There were 18 temporary-work agencies registered to Directorate of Labour in April 2020.
These temporary-work agencies hired out 424 workers in April 2020.
The unemployment forecast for
May 2020:
It is expected that the unemployment in May 2020 will decrease and be between 14,0% and 15,0%.
