Temporary support for the payment of wages due to the natural disaster in Grindavík
On the 27th of November, the parliament approved a bill from The Minister of Social Affair and Labour of temporary support for the payment of wages due to the natural disaster in Grindavík. The Directorate of Labour is responsible for the implementation of the Act. The aim of the Act is to guarantee peoples’ income who are not able to perform their work due to the natural disaster in Grindavík by ensuring payment of wages to the person up to a certain maximum amount. The aim is also to maintain the employment relationships between employers and employees.
This Act applies to temporary payments from the 11th of November to the 29th of February 2024 in the following cases:
- To employers in the general labour market who have paid wages to employees who are not able to perform their work at the workplace in Grindavík due to a natural disaster.
- To employees who are not able to perform their work at the workplace in Grindavík and their wage payments have been terminated.
- To self-employed individuals who are not able to perform their work in Grindavík.
- This resource does not apply to civil servants and municipality employees.
The Directorate of Labour is working on setting up an application and payment system for applicants where they can apply for the payment of wages via My Pages on The Directorate of Labour’s website
At first we intend to accept applications from wage earners where payments of wages have been terminated and from self-employed individuals. We expect to be able to accept applications at the beginning of December.
Employers will be able to apply around mid-December.
An announcement will be published on The Directorate of Labour’s website when applications can be submitted.
